Countywide : Schools Honored for Pupil Achievement

Share

Five Orange County schools are among winners of the 1989-90 California Distinguished Middle and High School Awards, which recognize schools that have dramatically increased average scores on California Assessment Program tests.

The winners were announced by Bill Honig, state superintendent of public instruction, at a meeting of the state Department of Education. They are Buena Park Junior High, Santiago Middle School in Orange, MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School in Santa Ana, Hewes Middle School in Santa Ana, and LaPaz Intermediate School in Mission Viejo.

The awards were broken down into four categories: outstanding performance on CAP tests; “significant improvement” in CAP scores; excellence in both performance and improvement, and continued high performance.

Buena Park Junior High, Santiago Middle School and MacArthur Fundamental were cited for outstanding performance. Hewes was honored for significant improvement in the school’s average CAP scores, and LaPaz received its award for excelling in both performance and improvement.

The schools will be honored at the fifth annual California Distinguished School Awards Ceremony on May 24 at the Anaheim Hilton and Towers Hotel.

The schools are also eligible to participate in the 1991 National School Recognition program run by the U.S. Department of Education. Winners of that competition will be announced by the White House in June.
