Among major regional banks, Mellon Bank Corp. of Pittsburgh said its operating earnings rose 23% to $65 million from $53 million a year earlier. Banc One of Columbus, Ohio, reported that first-quarter profit rose 17% to $101.8 million from $87.2 million from a year earlier. NCNB Corp. of Charlotte, N.C., said its first-quarter net climbed 85% to $140.1 million.
