Pasadena : Mayor Election Rejected

Share

The Board of Directors has turned down the idea of placing on the November ballot a measure asking voters if the mayor should be directly elected.

The mayor’s post now is rotated among the board’s seven members, each of which is elected by voters in their district.

In February, City Director Jess Hughston proposed a public vote on the idea of a citywide elected mayor and pay raises for city directors. Although directors agreed then to place the pay increase before voters, they decided Tuesday that the city is undergoing too many administrative changes at this time to add another.

The board is deciding on a new city manager to replace retiring, 17-year veteran Donald McIntyre. In addition, board members expect changes in their district boundaries as a result of the 1990 U.S. Census.
