Share

Nine student nurses have graduated from a joint program operated by Lynwood High School and St. Francis Medical Center.

The graduates were presented vocational nursing certificates during a recent ceremonial dinner at the hospital. They are now eligible to take the state examination for licensed vocational nurses after successful completion of the one-year pilot program.

The Lynwood Unified School District provided teachers and the medical center supplied classrooms and textbooks for the program. The school district also provided student transportation to the medical center.

The program, which had been in existence previously but was terminated, was re-established at the beginning of last year.

All of the students worked toward their high school diplomas at Lynwood High School while completing the nursing program at the medical center.

“The program is important because students can get a diploma while getting started on a career,” schools Supt. Audrey Clarke said.

In addition to the nine student nurses, 19 adults were given vocational nursing certificates. They were graduates of the Lynwood Adult School Nursing Program.
