MULTIFAMILY HOME FUTURES

Permits for the construction of multiple-family housing units (duplexes, apartments, condominiums) opened stronger this year than 1988 or 1989. January’s total of 600 such permits put 1990’s first month 67% ahead of last year and 57% more than 1988. None of the last three years, however, have come close to the totals issued in January, 1986, and January, 1987. A major increase in permits for Irvine lead the increased activity.

FIVE-COUNTY COMPARISON

The increase in multi-family home permit activity in Orange County outpaced both the local five-county area and the state in January. Compared to January 1989, the current year opened here with a 67% increase compared to 46% in the five counties and 27% statewide. Riverside and San Diego counties both had larger increases, while activity dropped in both Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.
