Grant for Homeless

Hollywood Sunset Clinic received the 1989 Good Neighbor Grant of $25,000 Feb. 21 from Kaiser Permanente Foundation. Proceeds will be used to support the clinic’s homeless health outreach project that provides free medical services to the youth sheltered at Angel’s Flight in the MacArthur Park area.

* AIDS Walk Long Beach 1990 held a celebration March 25 aboard the Queen Mary in the Britannia Salon (donated by Spruce Goose Entertainment Center) to celebrate net proceeds to date of $110,000. Funds are distributed to five agencies that assist AIDS patients.

* Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design’s “Cocktail Buffet and Silent Auction” April 1, was sponsored by the Group (a scholarship support organization) and netted $25,000 to help students in financial need at the institute.

* The UCLA John Wayne Cancer Clinic’s Odyssey Ball April 7 at the Santa Monica Air Center was attended by almost 750 guests. Jackie Banchik, president of the 500-member auxiliary that sponsored the gala, said approximately $250,000 was netted and will be used to support the needs of the clinic.

* City of Hope’s “An Evening of Laughter in Memory of Gilda Radner,” held April 7 at the Beverly Hilton hotel, was sponsored by Toychest for Hope Chapter. Gene Wilder, husband of the late Radner, thanked the 500 guests for their support. The $125,000 netted will be used to establish the Gilda Radner Bone Marrow Transplant Food Service Center at the medical center.

* Childrens Hospital’s A. Linn Murphree, head of ophthalmology, was presented a $14,400 check from the Society of Operating Cameramen at an event April 7 at MCA/Universal Studios. The society raised the funds for the Eye Care Clinic at the hospital through its annual sale of collector pins.

* Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Center of the Inland Valleys has been given a building with office space by Bob Fisher, owner of the Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena. Antoinette Carbone, executive director of the center, also said that Fisher has offered ongoing support and will furnish the new offices expected to open by summer of this year. The new building will serve as an outreach office with facilities ranging from a 24-hour hot line to food and parenting programs.

* Pepperdine’s MBA Program has received a two-year, $200,000 James Irvine Foundation Grant for a project that will place approximately 120 first-year MBA students in volunteer consulting relationships with nonprofit organizations in the Los Angeles area, including the Drew Medical Center, the Weingart Center Assn. and Food for All.
