The United States was eliminated from the World Hockey Championships for the fourth consecutive year, and the Soviet Union, Canada, Sweden and Czechoslovakia clinched medal-round berths in the tournament at Bern, Switzerland.
The United States lost, 6-1, to Sweden, joining Finland, West Germany and Norway at 0-4. The Soviet Union beat Finland, 6-1; Canada routed Norway, 8-0, and Czechoslovakia defeated West Germany, 3-0.
Each team has three preliminary-round games remaining. The medal round starts Friday, and no points are carried into the playoffs.
