Unemployment in China’s cities is expected to more than double this year to an estimated 10 million people, forcing Beijing to send 100,000 non-resident workers back to their native countryside.
Two articles in the state-run China Daily newspaper, reporting on mounting unemployment, accentuated the government’s concern over the growing ranks of jobless people, increased by an economic austerity program.
The English-language newspaper did not allude to those worries, but officials are known to fear a large pool of unemployed as potential tinder for unrest in China’s crowded cities.
In 1990, the China Daily said, “the number of the country’s urban job hunters is expected to exceed 10 million,” more than double this year’s figure.
