NATION IN BRIEF : MISSOURI : FAA Probes 4th Tire Failure on TWA Jets
The fourth tire failure in two weeks on Trans World Airlines jets was investigated by federal officials who said three of the incidents involved retreads on nose-wheel tires. The fourth was a blowout of a new tire beneath a wing, said a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration in Kansas City. In the latest incident, a DC-9 jetliner carrying 86 people to Peoria, Ill., was forced to return to St. Louis and land Sunday night after the plane’s nose-wheel tire lost its tread on takeoff. No injuries were reported.
