COLLEGE BASEBALL : No Incidents as Arizona State Beats USC

Playing each other for the first time since April 14 when they exchanged punches in a bench-clearing brawl, Arizona State defeated USC in a Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division baseball game Monday at Dedeaux Field, 7-5.

There were no incidents in a game the Sun Devils won with consecutive run-scoring triples by Jim Austin and Tommy Adams in the eighth inning.

In their previous meeting, at Tempe, Ariz., 10 players--five from each team--and USC Coach Mike Gillespie and Arizona State Coach Jim Brock were ejected after a sixth-inning melee.

The fighting started when Sun Devil pitcher Kip Yaughn threw a pitch behind the head of USC center fielder John Jackson after Jackson had called time out as Yaughn began his windup.

Jackson and Yaughn were suspended by the Pac-10 for Monday’s game.

USC was leading, 5-4, when Trojan pitcher John Cummings walked Anthony Manahan to lead off the eighth inning, then surrendered a triple to Austin.

Adams broke the tie with his triple off Tim Quintanilla and scored the Sun Devils’ final run on a sacrifice bunt by Todd Steverson.

Arizona State improved its record to 40-11 and 16-7 in the Pac-10. USC is 31-16 and 15-9.
