WORLD : Bonn Opposition Candidate for Chancellor Stabbed at Rally
Oskar Lafontaine, West Germany’s leading opposition candidate for chancellor, was stabbed in the throat by a woman at an election rally today, police said.
A woman carrying a bunch of flowers approached Lafontaine, 46, as he stood on stage at the Cologne Stadthalle and stabbed him with a knife.
Police, correcting initial reports that Lafontaine was shot, said the Social Democratic Party’s candidate to unseat Chancellor Helmut Kohl in December’s elections fell bleeding to the floor. His carotid artery had been cut, and his condition was serious.
