With Gordon and George Gund apparently growing closer to selling the Minnesota North Stars to a group headed by former Hartford Whaler minority owner Howard Baldwin, the NHL has called a special Board of Governors meeting to discuss the situation.

It is possible that in exchange for selling to a group that would keep the North Stars in Minnesota, the Gunds want the rights to a California expansion team. Additionally, they want the start date to be a year earlier than the league had previously designated for expansion. Baldwin’s group currently holds expansion rights to San Jose.
