COSTA MESA : 3 Colleges Benefit From Endowment

Students in transportation-related programs at three community colleges have received a boost from the estate of an Orange County entrepreneur.

The Coast Community College District received an endowment of $120,000 from the Herman R. Tate Fund. The donation is intended to help students studying subjects such as automotive technology, airline travel and aviation technology, fund executor John H. Davidson said.

Coastline, Golden West and Orange Coast colleges are expected to receive $40,000 each.

Tate began with a three-car taxicab company in Newport Beach in 1956 and ultimately expanded his operation into 12 cities. In 1983, the company became part of the Yellow Cab Cooperative Inc.

College district spokesman Drew Simpson said that Tate built his fortune in cabs after realizing the county’s needs for transportation in the 1960s. Tate directed that most of his estate benefit philanthropic causes.
