High Technology: San Jose-based Businessland Inc. reported a third-quarter loss of $1.7 million due to losses at its United Kingdom unit and its ComputerCraft chain of computer stores. The computer distributor’s loss contrasted with an $8.5-million profit a year earlier. Sales rose 10% to $323.4 million. Compaq Computer Corp. said its first-quarter profit rose 11% to $92 million due to growth in its international business. The Houston-based personal computer maker’s revenue totaled $872 million, up 28%. El Segundo-based Computer Sciences Corp. posted record profit and revenue in its fourth quarter, ended March 30, and in its fiscal year. Profit for the quarter was $19 million, up 17% from the year earlier; for the year, the figure was $58 million, up 15% from last year. Revenue for the quarter climbed 16% to $418 million; for the year, revenue was up 15% to $1.5 billion. The company said the strong performance stemmed primarily from commercial activities in the United States and Europe. Sun Microsystems Inc., which makes network-based computing systems, said third-quarter profit totaled $36.7 million, up 18%. Revenue rose 27% to $632.2 million. The Mountain View, Calif., firm credited widespread acceptance of its new product line, improved inventory management and lower component costs.
