SYRACUSE, N.Y. — General Electric Co. said today that it will eliminate 870 jobs in Syracuse over the next two years because of declining military spending.
The cuts affect about 15% of the company’s 6,000 employees at three Syracuse plants. They are the first significant local layoffs since the company shut down its picture tube production operation in November, 1986.
GE, Syracuse’s largest employer, will cut 200 salaried jobs by the end of 1990, GE spokeswoman Connie Grasso said. Another 420 hourly jobs and 250 salaried will be eliminated over the next two years.
The cuts are part of GE’s efforts to reorganize its aerospace defense businesses so the company can remain successful despite a shrinking market and increased competition.
