U.S. Supreme Court Ruling Puts Limits on Freedom of Religion

Share

Where is America headed? While Russia strives to embrace the twin ideals of democracy and individual liberty, our American institution of last resort, the Supreme Court, finds it insupportable to uphold individual religious liberty if it is at the expense of the laws of our democracy. The term “democracy” was ill-used by Justice Scalia in his opinion and was a smoke screen; the correct term is “the state.” This shows the Supreme Court’s new stance in its true light: no longer will individual religious liberty be upheld if it gets in the way of a state law, a state goal.

Why is religious freedom so important? No matter its form, true religion acknowledges a higher power and a higher good, and humankind’s profound link with those qualities.

No longer is the Supreme Court the institution of last resort for our first and most fundamental freedom. It has abdicated its role, and in so doing, has violated the trust of America. The decision should not be allowed to stand, and those justices responsible for it should resign.
