The investigation into last year’s murders of six Jesuit priests and two others in El Salvador has come to “a virtual standstill” and it appears increasingly unlikely that justice will be done in the case, a House Democratic task force concluded today.

The group, appointed by House Speaker Thomas S. Foley (D-Wash.) to look into the legal process that followed the killings, said investigators appeared to have put a lid on their probe after nine members of the Salvadoran armed forces were charged.
