Dutch Baughman, former head of the athletic departments at Furman and Virginia Tech, was named athletic director at Oregon State today.

Baughman, 41, succeeds Lynn Snyder, whose contract was not renewed.

Baughman had been senior associate athletic director at Oregon State since October. He is also former associate commissioner of the Southwest Athletic Conference.

Baughman said one of his biggest jobs will be dealing with the athletic department’s $2.5-million deficit.

“This is a tough job for anybody,” he said at a news conference this morning. “I see two main issues--fiscal management on an immediate nature and long-range planning. Both issues are important and tough but can be addressed.”

University President John Byrne said Baughman’s “strong personal character and top-level management skill will provide excellent athletic leadership” for the school.

Snyder replaced Dee Andros in 1985 as Oregon State’s ninth athletic director. Byrne gave no reason for not renewing Snyder’s contract.

Baughman will be paid $80,268 a year. His appointment takes effect July 1.
