Paul O’Neill’s two-run single in the first inning helped Jose Rijo gain his first victory since June as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-2, Monday night at Cincinnati.

Rijo (1-1) gave up four hits and struck out six in seven innings for his first victory in seven starts. Rob Dibble went 1 1/3 innings for his third save.

Rijo’s last victory was June 23 against the Dodgers. Lower back spasms limited him to four starts, none after he went on the disabled list July 17.

Houston 4, Montreal 2--Glenn Davis tied the score with his second home run of the game, and Rafael Ramirez put the Astros ahead with a two-run single in the eighth inning at Montreal.

Dennis Martinez carried a 2-1 lead into the eighth when he gave up a two-out home run to Davis. The Astros loaded the bases on singles by Glenn Wilson and Eric Anthony and a walk to Bill Doran before Ramirez singled.

Larry Andersen pitched one inning for the victory, and Dave Smith got his seventh save.

Atlanta 7, New York 4--Oddibe McDowell and Jeff Treadway hit two-run homers, and the Braves added two runs while the Mets’ David Cone argued a call at Atlanta.

With one out in the fourth, Dale Murphy singled and stole second before Ernie Whitt walked.

Andres Thomas flied out and Cone got Mark Lemke to hit a grounder to Gregg Jeffries, who threw to Cone covering first base--but umpire Charlie Williams ruled Cone missed the bag.

While Cone argued the call with his back to the plate, Murphy and Whitt scored.
