Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley joined a group of local Jewish leaders Tuesday to launch “Operation Exodus,” a campaign to raise $36 million by 1992 to help resettle Soviet Jews in Israel.

“The protection of human rights is the most noble endeavor in the world,” Bradley declared. “That is why I ardently support Operation Exodus, which has, as its foundation, the protection of human rights for Soviet Jews who want to resettle in Israel.

Richard Gunther, a co-chairman of the Honorary Operation Exodus Committee, said about 1 million Soviet Jews have applied for exit visas to move to Israel. Since the beginning of the year alone, 17,759 Soviet Jews have immigrated.
