NATION : N.C. Cargo Plane Crash Kills 1

A twin-engine cargo plane crashed and caught fire today as it tried to land at the airport, killing one man and critically injuring another, authorities said.

The plane was carrying packages from Raleigh to Wilmington when it crashed at New Hanover County International Airport, said Jean Nipper of United Parcel Service.

Audra West, spokeswoman for New Hanover Memorial Hospital, said two people were brought to the hospital, one dead on arrival and the other in critical condition.

The plane belonged to Tar Heel Aviation of Jacksonville, N.C., a charter service. Charles Brown, a pilot with Tar Heel, identified the dead crew member as co-pilot Darryl Banks, 24, of Trenton, N.C. The survivor is pilot David Sloan, 26, of Chinquapin, N.C., Brown said.
