Jonas Svensson of Sweden upset fourth-seeded Jim Courier, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, Friday to reach the semifinals of the BMW Open at Munich, West Germany.

Courier was the only seeded player left in the tournament.

Two Czechoslovakian players, Karel Novacek and Petr Korda, also advanced. Novacek defeated Swedish qualifier Christian Bergstroem, 6-1, 6-1, while Korda outlasted Jens Woehrmann of West Germany, 6-4, 7-5.

Austria’s Thomas Muster won the other semifinal berth when his opponent, Martin Strelba of Czechoslovakia, withdrew because of a muscle injury with Muster leading, 4-3, in the first set.

Svensson will face Novacek in the semifinals today, and Muster will play Korda. It will be Korda’s first semifinal in a clay-court tournament.

Muster, who was runner-up in last week’s Monte Carlo Open, is the highest-ranked player left in the tournament at No. 19.

Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova moved to within one match of their first encounter in nearly six months when both won quarterfinal matches in the Citizen Cup at Hamburg, West Germany.

Graf, ranked No. 1 in the world, ousted fifth-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-2, and Navratilova, ranked No. 2, overcame a late rally by Leila Meskhi of the Soviet Union to win, 6-3, 6-4.

Third-seeded Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain defeated Nicole Jagermann of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-0, and will face Navratilova in today’s semifinals. Judith Wiesner of Austria, the eighth-seeded player, defeated unseeded Petra Langrova of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-1, and will next play Graf.
