GARDENER’S CHECKLIST

For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:
* Plant summer annuals immediately if you haven’t done so yet. Try portulaca, a low-growing annual with succulent leaves and rose-like flowers in many colors, for color in hot, dry garden spots.
* Plan ahead for fall color by planting dahlia tubers now.
* Stake and tie up gladioluses as they grow to keep them from drooping.
* Water deeply and thoroughly so you won’t have to water as often--your lawn and garden will benefit from this.
