SHORT TAKES : ‘thirtysomething’ Personified

NEW YORK — Mel Harris has defined yuppie wife and mom on television’s “thirtysomething,” and now she’s living it.
Two years ago, Harris, who plays Hope Steadman on the ABC series, wasn’t thinking of domestic bliss after her marriage to photographer David Hume Kennerly ended.
“I didn’t want a relationship or anything even remotely similar to the life I have now,” Harris said in an interview in the May 14 People magazine.
But Harris remarried 18 months ago, to actor Cotter Smith of ABC’s “Equal Justice,” and their life together has definite “thirtysomething” tendencies.
Harris is breast-feeding the couple’s month-old daughter. Her 6-year-old son from her marriage to Kennerly is in kindergarten. She has two dogs. Construction workers are busy remodeling the couple’s house.
