Kari Geller, a 17-year-old writer from San Clemente, will have her play “The Waiting” produced at the Kennedy Center in Washington on June 4. The play was selected by the Young Playwrights Program of Very Special Arts, an organization based at the Kennedy Center that provides arts experiences for disabled young people. “The Waiting,” which is semi-autobiographical, tells the story of a young girl who comes down with encephalitis and whose mother has been disabled by polio. It was developed in workshops at the Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre, where Geller is a member of the ensemble. The Youth Theatre also has performed another Geller play, “The Children of Belfast.”
