WASHINGTON — Switzerland, whose aversion to joining world organizations is legendary, is now actively considering becoming a member of the International Monetary Fund.
Swiss Finance Minister Otto Stich told reporters in Washington today that the Bern government will decide this month whether to join the 152-nation world lending agency.
But Switzerland, not even a member of the United Nations or the European Community, is attaching stiff conditions to membership. Officials concede they may not be fulfilled.
Stich said he will only recommend an IMF application to his government if Switzerland has an clear chance of getting a seat on the IMF’s 22-member executive board.
“I won’t suggest joining without the possibility of a seat,” he said.
