CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Attorney General to Review Bennett Case

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

State Board of Equalization officials, reviewing the expense-account records of panel member William Bennett, turned the case over to the state attorney general’s office and the auditor general for further investigation. Board spokeswoman Delena Bratton said board auditors launched a review of Bennett’s expense reimbursements after they received allegations from Bennett’s opponent in the June 5 Democratic primary, Joseph F. Micallef, a former board auditor. Details of Micallef’s allegations were published May 2 by The Times, which conducted its own audit and reported that Bennett had been paid for out-of-town meals and lodging on days that state records showed he was at home. Bennett was unavailable for comment.
