Denis Thatcher arrived back at 10 Downing Street today from a visit to the United States and failed to notice his wife waiting in the front hall.

“Hello, how are you,” cried Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as her husband, who turns 75 Thursday, headed for their private apartment on the top floor of 10 Downing Street.

Stopped in his tracks, Denis turned, gave her a quick kiss and strode off.

His wife, waiting to meet Vice President Dan Quayle, called after him: “I am waiting for the vice president. Would you like to meet him?”

“I need a shave,” Denis called over his shoulder as he disappeared upstairs.

A smiling prime minister told reporters and photographers: “He’s just back from America. He wasn’t expecting a reception committee.”
