Three-time winner Johnny Rutherford had a minor brush with the wall, and Buddy Lazier, a frustrated rookie, and Bill Vukovich III crashed for the second year in a row during practice for the Indianapolis 500.
Vukovich, the 1988 Indy rookie of the year, was taken to Methodist Hospital with a concussion. He was reported awake and alert.
Neither Lazier nor Rutherford was injured in the other crashes.
