* Jimmy’s Gaffe: Jimmy Breslin, Newsday’s Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, has apologized for his racist, profane remarks about Ji-Yeon Mary Yuh, a reporter who sent him a computer message calling his May 3 column sexist. But even the apology displeased Helen Zia, head of the New York chapter of the Asian-American Journalists Assn., which, with the Coalition Against Anti-Asian Violence and the Organization of Asian Women, has demanded that Breslin quit or be fired and that he publicly apologize to Yuh. His insults to her included calling the Korean-American colleague “a yellow cur.” Breslin’s paper reprimanded him for his remarks but a spokeswoman said Sunday no further action is planned.

* Jimmy’s Prize: Former President Jimmy Carter has won the 1990 Philadelphia Liberty Medal, which carries a $100,000 prize. Carter was cited Monday “for his active involvement during the past few years in issues of liberty around the globe and his exemplary use of the post-presidential period.” Since leaving office, Carter has mediated international disputes, acted as neutral observer in Latin American elections and worked as a carpenter for a nonprofit group.
