TENNIS ROUNDUP : Chang Eliminated in Opener Again
Michael Chang, who is preparing to defend his French Open title, lost his opening match for the second time in as many weeks Tuesday when he was ousted from the German Open at Hamburg, West Germany.
Chang, who was playing in only his sixth match since recovering from a hip injury, lost to Juan Aguilera of Spain, 6-3, 6-2.
Top-seeded Boris Becker struggled early but then routed Paolo Cane of Italy, 7-5, 6-1.
“Aguilera played well and I missed a few shots, and on clay sometimes that’s all it takes,” Chang said. “It’s frustrating not to hit the shots you want to hit, but hopefully it will come with time.”
Gabriela Sabatini, who has won the Italian Open two years in a row, rallied for a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 second-round victory over Ann Grossman in Rome.
Top-seeded Martina Navratilova, who plays her first singles match today, teamed up with 14-year-old Jennifer Capriati in doubles to beat Tracy Morton and Kate McDonald of Australia, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Brad Pearce upset second-seeded Jim Grabb, 6-1, 6-4, and Mark Kaplan beat fifth-seeded Dan Goldie, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the first round of the U.S. men’s clay-court championships at Kiawah Island, S.C.
Third-seeded UC Davis won the NCAA Division II women’s team championship with a 5-3 victory over top-seeded Cal Poly Pomona at Rancho Cordova, Calif.
Davis clinched the title when the doubles team of Alison Vidal and Reagan Solt defeated Pomona’s Donna Ewing and Cindy Hamnquist, 6-2, 6-2.
