Long Beach : Restrictions on Lawn Watering Considered

Share

Residents may be prohibited from watering their lawns between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. under a plan the Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners is considering. The board is reviewing whether to go ahead with phase one of the city’s emergency conservation plan.

In addition to the lawn-watering restriction, phase one would prohibit people from hosing off driveways, patios and sidewalks, and it would order decorative fountains shut down unless the water used is recycled. Phase one also would prohibit restaurants from serving water unless requested and it would require water leaks to be repaired.

Long Beach and other cities have been asked to reduced their water consumption by 10% as a result of the statewide drought. In Los Angeles, officials are considering a mandatory 10% reduction in water usage.

Gov. George Deukmejian has designated May as Water Awareness Month, and the Long Beach City Council last week issued a proclamation supporting the statewide campaign to encourage people to conserve water.
