Israeli soldiers Thursday shot and killed a Palestinian and wounded 20 other Arabs in the occupied Gaza Strip, and Jewish settlers rampaged through the West Bank town of Hebron, firing on homes and smashing cars.

In the Gaza Strip camp of Beit Hanoun, soldiers opened fire on stone-throwing Palestinians, striking Fayez Mohammed Hamad, 24, in the back. He was pronounced dead at Gaza City’s Ahli hospital, officials said. The army confirmed the death.

About 1,500 villagers later marched in Hamad’s funeral procession, which developed into a nationalist protest, Arab reporters said. Troops in a helicopter and 30 vehicles monitored the ceremony and fired into the crowd, wounding at least 20 people, when confrontations broke out.

Israel Radio described the confrontation as “serious,” but an army spokesman confirmed only five of the wounded.

In Hebron, about 30 settlers from the nearby Jewish enclave of Kiryat Arba rampaged through the town, using clubs and stones to smash the windshields of Arab-owned cars, Arab reports and the national Itim news agency said.

Arab reports said the rampage began after settlers were stoned by Palestinians.
