The Maiden, a British yacht with an all-female crew, reported today that it had been struck by a whale and been turned around 360 degrees by a water spout during the final leg of the Whitbread Round the World race.

Maiden skipper Tracy Edwards told race officials that the craft was not damaged by the whale, but the mast was harmed during the encounter with the water spout.

The Fisher and Paykel yacht of New Zealand continued to lead the 3,387-mile leg from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to Southampton by 10 miles over Steinlager 2, another New Zealand entry.

Steinlager 2 held an overall lead of more than 35 hours over Fisher and Paykel as the competitors left Ft. Lauderdale last weekend.
