FOREIGN STUDENT ENROLLMENT AT COUNTY COLLEGES

The number of foreign nationals enrolled at Orange County college campuses during the last six years has increased steadily, reaching just over the 3,000 mark in the fall of 1989. That’s a 68% increase over the number here in 1984. Most of the county’s foreign students opt for four-year institutions, rather than junior colleges. In 1984, 76% studied at four-year schools, but that share dropped the next year and remained close to 65% until last year, when again it moved up over the 70% mark.

UC Irvine, the leading choice of these students, was home to four in 10 of the total in 1984, a ratio that has since averaged only about three in 10 (most recently, 33% last year).
