Britain Denies Asylum to 33 Chinese Refugees
Reuters
LONDON —
Britain is to send 33 Chinese back to Panama today after rejecting their pleas for political asylum, a government spokesman said.
A refugee aid organization, the June 4 China Support Group, said some of them had fled China to avoid persecution for their part in last year’s pro-democracy protests in Beijing.
The 33 men and women arrived in Britain a week ago from Panama hoping to travel to Canada, but their Canadian visas were found to be forged, and they were forced to stay in Britain for questioning.
