OUT & ABOUT : The Marty and Elayne Show

Share

TAKE A BREAK from the city’s shriekingly hip by kicking back in the cozy, windowless Dresden Room in Los Feliz. The dining room serves OK food, but all the action, which is considerable these days, is at the bar, where Vegas veterans Marty and Elayne belt out vintage Cole Porter, Gershwin and Rodgers and Hart five nights a week. They also play jazz; their rendition of “The Flintstones” theme sounds more like a Thelonious Monk composition.

Tuesday night is open-mike night, when wishful crooners can get up and sing with the band; the results vary from frightening to awe-inspiring. The Marty and Elayne show has acquired quite a following--as has the Dresden Room. Settle into one of the deep, cushiony booths or grab a seat at the piano bar. Let yourself go. Sway along with “There Will Never Be Another You.” Moan to the stranger sitting next to you that your husband/wife doesn’t understand you. It’s OK. It’s that kind of place.

The Dresden Room, 1760 N. Vermont Ave., Los Feliz; (213) 665-4294.
