NAMES IN THE NEWS : ‘The Far Side’ Creator Honored

Gary Larson, creator of the popular cartoon “The Far Side,” Saturday received Washington State University’s highest honor--the Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Larson, a 1972 WSU graduate in communications, became the 24th recipient of the award. It was presented during the school’s spring commencement ceremony.

Larson delivered the commencement address, titled “The Importance of Being Weird.” Larson told about 10,000 people at graduation to listen to the things inside themselves that make them different.

He urged the 2,600 graduates not to be afraid of taking risks and to take criticism in stride.

He advised them that when they come to a fork in the road to “chose the scary one, the weird one.”
