USD Women Lose in NCAA Tennis

University of San Diego senior Aby Brayton and junior Tonya Fuller were beaten in the first round of the NCAA women’s individual tennis championships Monday in Gainesville, Fla.

Brayton (16-12), ranked 34th, lost to 27-ranked Anya Kochoff of USC, 6-4, 6-2. Fuller (23-10), ranked 32nd, was upset by 75th-ranked Lisa Green of Stanford, 6-0, 6-1.

Also at Gainesville, 19th-ranked Giovanna Carotenuto of U.S. International was beaten by 18th-ranked Caryn Moss of Georgia, 6-2, 6-4. Carotenutu, a freshman from Italy, finished at 19-5.

Top-seeded UC San Diego (15-4) easily defeated College of St. Thomas, 9-0, in the second round of the women’s NCAA Division III team championships at Trenton, N.J. Christine Behrens defeated Jennifer Harkins at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Berhens teamed with Susan Carney to win, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.

The No. 3 doubles team of Tim Ditzler and Jeff Beathard defeated Phil Postlewaite and Paul Spinner, 6-3, 6-1, to clinch UC San Diego’s 5-4 consolation-round victory over St. John’s College at Swarthmore, Penn. UCSD improved to 13-11 and plays Gustavus Adolphus in the consolation final today.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers have waived wide receiver Wendell Jones, a rookie free agent from Grambling. The move leaves the Chargers with 88 players on their roster.
