TRIPLE CROWN RATINGS

Share

REMARKS: “I’m lucky at Pimlico,” trainer Wayne Lukas said. “I won my first Classic here. I probably ought to have a stable here.”

Lukas, who won his first Preakness--and first Triple Crown race--with Codex in 1980, will start Land Rush and Kentucky Jazz in the 115th Preakness Saturday.

Lukas won a second Preakness, with Tank’s Prospect, in 1985. He also has won the Black-Eyed Susan, Pimlico’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies, three times--with Lucky Lucky Lucky in 1984, Family Style in 1986 and Imaginary Lady last year--and last Saturday, with Criminal Type, Lukas won the Pimlico Special, Maryland’s first $1-million race.

Land Rush and Kentucky Jazz, who will not be coupled in the betting because they have different owners, will be longshots in the Preakness, much like Lukas’ other winners in the stake. Codex was the third choice, behind Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk and Colonel Moran, in the Preakness, and Tank’s Prospect paid $11.40.

After a good second to Summer Squall in the Blue Grass at Keeneland, Land Rush was a dull seventh, more than 16 lengths behind the victorious Unbridled, in the Kentucky Derby.

“Unbridled got the trip and he was the best horse in the Derby,” Lukas said. “Land Rush didn’t quite have the trip he wanted. He got bumped around a little bit, and we feel that he deserves another chance.”

Kentucky Jazz had won only one of seven starts before he led almost all the way and won by 11 lengths against mediocre opposition in a 1 1/16th-mile race that opened the Derby day card. Before that race, the only eye-catching line on Kentucky Jazz’s record was a close second as a 2-year-old to Red Ransom last summer at Belmont Park. Red Ransom was considered one of this year’s top 3-year-olds before an injury eliminated him from the Triple Crown series.

A Texas-bred, Kentucky Jazz is by Dixieland Band, out of Tinnitus--the same mare who produced Groovy, the 1987 national sprint champion who ran last in the Derby and next to last in the Preakness in 1986.

Angel Cordero, who has won the Preakness twice, with Codex and with Gate Dancer in 1984, will ride Land Rush for the fifth consecutive time. Lukas is seeking a jockey for Kentucky Jazz, who was frequently ridden by Cordero before Gary Stevens became a last-minute replacement at Churchill Downs. Stevens will ride Mister Frisky in the Preakness.

“We need to get Kentucky Jazz to relax,” Lukas said. “So we need a relaxing-type rider.”

After Hail Atlantis, who will run for Lukas along with Bright Candles in Friday’s Black-Eyed Susan, worked five furlongs Monday morning in a quick :59 1/5, Land Rush worked in :59 4/5. Kentucky Jazz’s time for the same distance was 1:02 1/5. Donnie Miller, a Pimlico jockey who was chosen to ride Deputed Testamony shortly before entry time for the 1983 Preakness and then scored an upset victory, worked Land Rush and would like to land the mount on Kentucky Jazz.

“I was surprised that Land Rush worked as fast as he did,” Miller said. “He did it very easy.”

Sunday morning, in his final serious preparation for the Preakness, Mister Frisky worked in :59 2/5. Mister Frisky didn’t work as quickly going into the Derby, in which his 16-race winning streak ended with an eighth-place finish.

If the Preakness has 10 starters, it will be the race’s largest field since Tank’s Prospect beat 10 opponents. The field for Saturday is expected to include Unbridled, Summer Squall, Pleasant Tap, Mister Frisky, Champagneforashley, Land Rush, Kentucky Jazz, Music Prospector, Fighting Notion and Baron de Vaux.

Eight of the 10 3-year-olds are in Maryland. Unbridled is scheduled for a workout today at Churchill Downs and then will be flown to Baltimore Wednesday. A couple of other horses were late arrivals at Pimlico for the Preakness: Codex and Tank’s Prospect.
