Sun Introduces Low-Cost Workstation: The Sparcstation SLC computer workstation, priced at $4,995, gives the Mountain View-based firm a powerful low-cost challenger for the personal computer market. Sun, which makes a family of workstations--speedy computers favored largely by engineers and other professionals--said it hoped the new machine would bring its technology to a broader range of users. Sun is the leading seller of workstations based on a technology known as reduced instruction set computing, or RISC, which increases a computer’s performance by streamlining the number of tasks it has to perform.
