UCSD Women Lose Tennis Final

The defending champion UC San Diego women’s tennis team lost to Gustavus Adolphus, 5-4, Wednesday in the championship match of the NCAA Division III championships at Trenton, N.J.

The match was played indoors because of rain, UCSD’s first indoor match this season.

The deciding match was No. 3 doubles, where Molly McCormick and Heidi Rostberg defeated UCSD’s Amanda Lynch and Kristen Diels, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, (7-2).

UCSD (16-5), which was ranked No. 1 in Division III and seeded No. 1 in the tournament, swept the first three singles. At No. 1, Christine Behrens defeated Amy McCrea, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Robyn Inada defeated Mary Sutherland of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, at No. 2, and UCSD’s Susan Carney defeated Nikki LaVoi, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 3.

During the regular season, UCSD defeated Gustavus Adolphus, 8-1.

Individual singles and doubles competition begins today. Behrens is seeded second in singles and, she and Carney are seeded second in doubles behind McCrea and Sutherland.
