A measure that would allow Illinois universities to pay student-athletes and would regulate athletic associations’ investigations of college sports programs passed its first hurdle in the Illinois House of Representatives.
Under the bill, universities could decide to pay student athletes a stipend of up to $250 a month.
The measure was sent to the Illinois Senate on a 71-37 vote. However, it would not apply to the current NCAA investigation of the University of Illinois basketball program and would only take effect if five other nearby states enacted similar laws.
