NATION : North at Closed Court Hearing Believed Linked to Iran-Contra
Oliver L. North appeared at a closed hearing today in federal court, apparently in connection with a new grand jury investigation into the Iran-Contra affair.
North went before U.S. District Judge Aubrey E. Robinson in a session in which the courtroom doors were locked.
The former White House aide was accompanied by his attorneys.
While the court session with North was taking place, a newly impaneled grand jury looking into the Iran-Contra affair was meeting in another room of the courthouse.
Sources familiar with the 3 1/2-year-old criminal investigation have said the office of independent counsel Lawrence E. Walsh is trying to determine the precise roles of Ronald Reagan, George Bush and others in the affair.
Walsh’s office has refused all comment.
The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said last month that it was likely that North would be called before a grand jury and that Iran-Contra prosecutors also were likely to call former national security adviser John M. Poindexter. Both North and Poindexter have been convicted on criminal charges in the Iran-Contra affair.
