President Bush called the presidents of Nicaragua and Panama today to tell them that $720 million in U.S. help will soon be on its way after Congress finally approved his emergency aid package for the hemisphere’s two newest democracies.

Bush “will sign the aid bill as soon as he receives it,” Deputy White House Press Secretary Stephen Hart said.

The White House announced as Bush arrived here for a Memorial Day weekend vacation that he has telephoned both Nicaraguan President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro and Panamanian President Guillermo Endara to inform them that Congress finally passed the emergency aid early today.

The two Latin leaders “expressed their gratitude for the congressional action and thanked (Bush) for his efforts on behalf of their countries,” Hart said.
