Louis H. Winer; Did Pioneering Work in Dermatology

Share

Louis H. Winer, one of the first dermatologists in the United States to use a microscope to diagnose skin diseases, died in Santa Monica, a grandson, Maurice Levin, announced.

Winer, a professor emeritus at UCLA, was known internationally in his field for discovering several skin conditions, among them the “dilated pore of Winer,” a condition involving the abnormal functioning of the hair follicle duct. Before his discovery, the condition was often confused with forms of skin cancer.

Winer, who died Sunday, was only 22 when he graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he did his internship and residency. He also studied at the University of Vienna, practiced in Minneapolis and then moved to Beverly Hills, where he had maintained a private practice since 1945.
