Job Training

My experience in running a business has taught me that the column by Gary Burtless (“We’re Not Drowning in Lousy Jobs, but Awash in Untrained Workers,” Opinion, May 13) is right on the money. I believe that one of the serious problems in relation to employment is proper training.

Fair or not, a lot of employers want evidence of not only your potential as an employee, shown by your academic, social and leadership behavior in the petri dish of college, but also at least minimal proof that your qualifications allow you to function properly in the “real world.”

That’s one good reason to do an internship. Successful internship evaluation says to the potential employer, “This person has demonstrated his ability, not only in the classroom, but in the business environment similar to yours.”

It’s an extremely important addition to anyone’s resume.
