UCSD Women Finish Third; PLNC Men Fourth

The UC San Diego women’s track and field team recorded its highest finish ever, third, with 44 points at the NCAA Division III meet in Naperville, Ill.

The Tritons were led by Shannon Quigley, the defending champion who placed second in the discus (156-8) and freshman Erica Washington, who was third in the 100 (12.34).

The Wisconsin Oshkosh women won with 75 points, followed by State University of New York-Cortland with 48.

Quigley’s throw was exactly 10 feet farther than her winning effort in 1989. Teammates Rachel Beerman (140-8) and Shelly Squibb (137-8 1/2) were fifth and seventh. The Tritons’ Michelle Conlay finished fifth (17:29.9) in the 5,000 meters.

Nobody placed Saturday for UCSD’s men, who finished 28th out of 90 teams.

Point Loma Nazarene College’s men finished fourth, second highest in school history, at the NAIA Championships in Stephenville, Tex., with 45 points. Oklahoma Baptist won the meet with 57.

Nine PLNC men placed sixth or better and gained All-American honors in the meet, led by Dan Raatjes, who was second in the high jump (7-1 1/2). PLNC’s 400-meter relay team was also second.

PLNC’s women finished 31st.

GOLF

San Diego State’s men failed to advance to the NCAA championships, shooting a three-round team total 871 in the West Regional at Las Cruces, N.M. Kevin Riley, who shot a final-round 72 at University Golf Course, tied for 17th with a score of 212 and was SDSU’s top finisher. SDSU finished 39 strokes behind champion Nevada-Las Vegas (832) and nine behind New Mexico and Nevada Reno (862), the last two teams to advance.

SOCCER

The Los Angeles Heat (3-2) got goals from Bobby Bruchs and Steve Sharp and defeated the San Diego Nomads, 2-0, in overtime at Southwestern College. The Nomads (4-5) will play the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks in a rematch of last year’s Western Soccer League championship game, won by the Nomads, today at 4 p.m., not 7:30 as previously scheduled.

SURFING

Three-time U.S. surfing champion Mike Lambresi of Oceanside was one of five area surfers to qualify among the final 32 for the $40,000 Body Glove tournament at Imperial Beach. The others were Sean Mattison and Paul Barr of Carlsbad, Doug Silva of Solana Beach and Scott Blake of San Diego.

Bodyboard qualifying heats will be held today, starting at 7:30 a.m.
