Fight promoter Mrad Saied was arrested for investigation of fraud the day after a bout in Tunis, Tunisia, was called off because Saied refused to pay the fighters.
Tunisia’s Kamel Bouali was to have made his first defense of the World Boxing Organization junior lightweight title against Tyrone Downes of Barbados. Bouali was to get $100,000, Downes $44,000, but Saied said he couldn’t meet the fighters’ demands to be paid before entering the ring.
The crowd, estimated at close to 8,000, had been waiting four hours before the fight was called.
Saied reportedly contended that only 911 tickets had been sold.
