Pope John Paul II told tens of thousands of Maltese on Sunday not to idolize “practical materialism” but to stay true to the Christian values that have existed on the island for 2,000 years.

The pontiff was speaking at the final Mass of a three-day visit to Malta, where he sought to show that the Vatican and the government of the Mediterranean republic have patched up their differences, which developed under a previous Socialist Maltese government.
